                    — There’s that rather smug smile of hers.

“I give you my word. I won’t say a damn thing about it. You do have a reputation, of sorts, to uphold. People finding out you have a soft spot like that may just make ‘em curious as to why you’ve elected to help out a human.” Levi chuckled breathlessly and let Lilith set her up for transport, then draped her arms over the other female’s shoulders. She had faith Lilith wouldn’t drop her, but having her arms where they were was a typical precaution. “Thank you,” she added after a moment, letting her eyes close and finding slight satisfaction in not having to keep herself standing on legs that felt as springy as new saplings.

Hearing Lilith speak about ‘a show indeed’ made Levi wonder just what it was about demons the other hated so much. Was it because so often, demons were the reason she was called forward to take people to their afterlife locations, or was it something more? Maybe somewhere else down the line, that would be a question she’d ask. She didn’t want to say it and risk saying the wrong thing, but she felt as though there was a certain level of ‘friendship’ between herself and Death. She was grateful for it; and where someone else may have saw it as an opportunity to buy time should they wind up heading for the afterlife, Levi just looked at it as having someone she could count on.

Lilith was certainly someone Levi felt she could rely on. After all, the woman was helping her out of a particularly troublesome situation, and offering to take her somewhere for proper care. That spoke volumes. “I’ll trust your word,” she added, nodding gently in response to Lilith’s way of removing bloodstains from clothes. The only way Levi found to do so, was soaking things in peroxide. It worked well enough, despite the fact that it always seemed like the threads wore thin after a while.

“Hospital is fine. I’m sure I can come up with a convincing enough story or whatever to keep from having too many questions asked. Maybe. I’ll make it up as I go,” she said, a dull chuckle escaping her lips. She took a deep breath in, finding herself smiling slightly. She’d been incredibly lucky that Lilith had found her when she had, and that no other demons had come to finish a job that hadn’t been done properly. She let out a sigh and let her eyes flutter open slowly.

“So…” Levi began, thinking for a moment on how to continue. “Call it if it’s out of line, but I’m genuinely curious. Why me? And by that, I mean, why are you helping me out?” she asked, scrunching up her nose a bit at a pain that flared up just above her right knee.

              – “Eh, the reputation’s just so people don’t try to get to me through using the ones I manage to get to caring about. That, and it’s a lot easier to intimidate when people think you’re a heartless bitch.” This would probably have been easily arousing suspicion by now, anyways, if they had been in the town the female lived nearby. She thanked luck that they were in the city, where not a lot of suspicion would be raised- hopefully, anyways. She was also grateful that it was night, for it only helped to mask just how hurt Levi was. Of course, Lilith could tell, but that was because she had been able to smell the girl’s blood. “You’re welcome.”

“I’ll help you convince them if you need back up,” she replied, smirking lightly. If there was one thing she could do with near perfectionism, it was lying. She lied about her age, her morals, and even sometimes made up stories, which were, once again, full of lies. Since she usually had the definition of the term “poker face” for a default facial expression, she never exactly got found out. It had to take a liar, usually, in order to catch her own lies. “I am a bit of a liar, after all. It shouldn’t be too hard with the both of us telling the same story.”

Being careful as to how she walked, she seemed to be rather wary. Whether it was just over paranoia or not was left up to be debated. She usually was wary during the night, anyways, considering that not everything was so called “peaceful and quiet” during the evening hours. It was better to be on guard at all times, rather than have your guard down and suffer for it later. It didn’t exactly help the two were rather attractive women, despite how tall Lilith was.

Raising her eyebrows at the girl’s question, she thought for a moment. “Hm.. I honestly don’t know myself,” she answered, choosing each word carefully. “It could be just because people like me- personifications of Death and things relating to it, in different folklore and legends, such as the Grim Reaper and shinigami- have the tendency of disliking demons for their behavior. However, seeing as I have confided in you at least twice now, I think it’s safe to say I’ve grown to have a fondness for you. What’s it called again? Friends, or something like that?”

She honestly didn’t really know what it was called. She hadn’t had much of a friend in so long, so she would not know what qualified for friendship. If there was even qualifications at all.

Levi nodded softly. “I bet being in limbo puts the screws right too people. Being… in between living and dead for those few moments. It just seems like a lot of energy.” She nibbled at her lower lip for a moment, then ran a hand through her hair, tucking the section behind her ear. She watched Lilith for a moment, taking note in the change of posture and overall stance. So once upon a time ago, so she presumed, Lilith had been close to someone. She’d let it rest at that. If Lilith wanted to talk more about it, she would. Levi wouldn’t pressure her about it.

“Humans can be really horrible,” she admitted, shrugging a little and looking ahead of her. She focused on the wall for a moment, furrowing her brow. “Capable of some pretty horrible things. And it sucks we have that ability.” She sighed and shook her head, looking back at the other female. “And I’m sorry you have to deal with them before they wind up going where they need to go.”

               – “Being tired is merely a bonus side effect of being stuck between life and death. Nobody in that state, however, lasts, at the most, a day against me.” Nobody truly did. They always seemed to underestimate her, and she had a feeling that was because of her gender. Yet, she knew exactly what she was doing. When they tried to run, it actually.. gave her a sense of pleasure and even a bit of mild amusement. Sometimes, she’d even put on an act of her own, picking up a distant, almost.. morbid hum, and she never ran when they did. She walked, let a few of her chains clink against each other, maybe tap whatever weapon she had to be holding at the time against her boot, just for the effect of making them scared.

“I’ll have to agree with you on that. I’ve witnessed it first hand. Who do you think had to go in and take all those souls from the World Wars?” She lightly joked, chuckling. “I don’t mind dealing with some of them. Most just go willingly and, well, I told you what others have done.”

Levi smiled softly, something she rarely let herself do on hunts. Lilith’s concern was intriguing; she wasn’t entirely sure what to make of it. Having Death concerned about your well being was certainly interesting enough. “Considerate is an interesting look on you. No offense. I just… When I picture Death, my brain always wants to go to the worst. But you’re different. A bit of a soft spot, not that I’ll remind you about that in the future. It’ll stay between you and I,” she teased, laughing a bit and grimacing. Okay, now it was starting to hurt to keep herself on her feet. She’d have to move soon, if she could force herself to do so.

‘One foot in front of the other, Levi. It’s really not that hard to do,’ she thought, gripping the rail just a little harder for a moment. She let out a slow breath and took the smallest of steps forward, feeling her legs bow. At this, she laughed and let her head hang. “This could take a minute or three,” she said, nodding a little and swallowing back the sick feeling in her stomach. Legs weren’t supposed to feel like that, unless there was nerve damage or they were asleep. Her legs were fine, as far as she could tell. They’d worked long enough to get her outside. Why there were so many problems now, was slightly frustrating.

She set a hand on Lilith’s shoulder after she managed to loosen up the deathgrip on the rail. “Your shirt’s cute though. I don’t wanna get it all gross by bleeding on it,” she responded, a chuckle escaping her lips. She grinned lopsidedly at Lilith, tilting her head to the side. “As much as I don’t want to bleed on it, anyway.” The hand that she’d kept around the railing shook a little. Maybe it would just be easier to let Lilith carry her. If she kept trying on her own, she had a feeling the other girl would just get frustrated with her and carry her anyway.

“You win, this time. I don’t foresee myself walking out of here easily. I’d have better luck if I crawled, but that might take a lot of effort too,” she admitted, sighing a little. In the future, she’d make it a point to be prepared for the worst when it came to fighting off demons. This one had been lucky enough to have an upper hand. “A show, huh? Well, if you ever wind up saving my ass in the future, I encourage a good show.” She swallowed hard again. “I’ll replace the shirt, if I ruin it.”

Just a little more humor to make a sucky situation suck a little less. Levi was good for that.

image

                 – “So long as you don’t let anyone know that Death’s got a soft spot, we’re good.” After all, she did have the reputation of being a rather cold, heartless, sassy bitch. If anyone else were to find out she had a bit of a soft spot, which was due to all the years of living among the living, they’d be sure to use it against her in some way or form. Which, even though it was a very rare thing for her to do so, was why she never cried in front of anybody; she’d never let anyone see to it that her walls were to be shattered and stomped upon.

“A show indeed.” She let out one of those low chuckles of hers. If there was one thing she had to enjoy, it was beating the shit out of demons. Her hatred for them came about a long time ago, though that story could be saved for later. Death and demons didn’t really get along well, anyways. She figured there’d not be really much of an explanation as to why once she got into it, anyways. It would be better just to let her actions do the talking- but if that demon came back to try and finish Levi off, her actions would speak volumes she’d dare not say around even the most foul mouthed of any being or entity.

"Nah, you wouldn’t ruin it. I’ve got my ways of getting blood out of things.“ She chuckled once again, being extremely careful to pick the girl up in a piggy back style, her hands being wary of any cuts or bruises left on the legs, and moving into the spot of where "And good. You shouldn’t be worrying about walking- you most likely have internal things to worry about. Just focus on staying alive for the moment and rest. However, I must ask- would it be fine if I took you to a hospital?"

After all, keeping people alive was the exact opposite of her job. While she was certainly doubtful that Levi would not survive, it was a possibility- and she didn’t have a lot of the high-tech equipment a hospital would, especially if there was internal damage. She could fix a lot of things, but a nervous system was not one of them.

“People can’t escape death forever,” Levi started, her expression softening a bit. “I’m not sure why they think they can. I mean… After a while, doesn’t it just get tiring to run? People go through and see so much in life. Every story ends somewhere.” She shook her head. Words didn’t exactly feel like he strong suit in that moment. Though, letting her mind wander a little, she wondered what she would do, if she were faced with death.

It was essentially the end of the story. That was it. No more carrying on the mission, someone else would take her place. Still, she couldn’t help but wonder in the back of her mind if she was in those shoes, would she go willingly or try to fight it. Blinking, she let out a sigh and looked to Lilith again. “Sounds like it can be a rough job— What you do. I’d ask why you wouldn’t kill a human, but I feel like it’s something you don’t particularly want to talk about.”

And if she decided she wanted to, well, Levi was more than willing to listen. It wasn’t every day where you could sit down with Death and talk about things.

image

                  – She nodded in agreement. “Most of them just pass out from exhaustion. I rarely chase after them. Some of them can’t even make it out of my sight before they fall down. Sometimes, I even encourage them to try and run.” She was one who definitely used intimidation for her advantage. Considering how tall she was- by human standards, anyways- she was not easily intimidated, but rather, one who was the one who handed out intimidation. “Usually, I lead them here, and that’s the end of it.”

Blinking once, she wondered if she could confide in the girl not to tell, if she did give the reason why she wouldn’t kill a human by her own hands. “It can be rough, yes. As far as the reason I would not like to kill a human goes, it’s a rather long story.” A long story that included why she acted so cold at times. She distanced herself from most people for the same reason, too.

“I’ll leave it at this. I… got too close to somebody who could damage too easily once.” She explained, her arms crossing over her chest.

“I’m not letting you walk, I’m going to carry you.”

image

Levi laughed dully, shaking her head. “I’m honestly surprised to hear you say that, Lilith, considering how gruff you can be,” she admitted, breathing in sharply and gritting her teeth. So maybe that particular hunt hadn’t gone as she had hoped it would, which, wasn’t completely unexpected? Levi had run in guns blazing with only half an idea on what she needed to do. It wasn’t completely unbelievable that she’d been tossed around like a ragdoll by a demon. In her head, she made a note to plan better next time.

Truthfully, she was thankful Lilith was there for her. How she’d known where to look was beyond Levi’s wildest imagination, but she wasn’t about to look at that kind of luck and question it too hard. Luck was luck, and where she had breaks, she’d take them. Grinning at the girl, she shook her head. “You don’t have to carry me. I can handle this. Probably.” She laughed, though it sounded more manic than anything. Underneath her weight, her legs felt like twigs, ready to bend and bow in any direction. She made a face.

Steadying herself before she could tumble head over heels, she wrapped her hands around the rail of the stairs, gripping tightly until her knuckles began to turn white. A sick feeling swirled in her stomach, making her close her eyes. “I might just need a second to breathe, is all,” she added, nodding slowly and hating the way the world bobbed up and down behind her closed eyes, too.

“When this is all over,” she continued, laughing a little, “I think I’ll take you up on that drink.”

image

              – “Yes, I can be gruff. That doesn’t mean I can’t sometimes be.. Considerate.” It had taken her a moment to find the word. While, usually, she wouldn’t care about this, she had a particular hatred for demons- one that had been there for years on end. Very rare, was what it was, to find her even talking to a demon, and it usually ended up in a fight with one on her part. The damn things were a pain in the ass, either way, though them and her had more in common than what they would like to admit.

Watching the woman, one of Death’s eyebrows raised upwards. The look on her face was one of mild curiosity to see if Levi could actually stand up on her own. Hunters could be very surprising, after all. She’d seen a few get up without a bruise or difficulty, and others so bloody not even she could save them. Their strengths were certainly those of a varying type. However, this girl seemed to be having a great deal of difficulty, and it would be easier to just do against her wishes. “… Levi..”

Sighing, Lilith made her way towards the female, standing right by her. “It would not take so long if you would just let me do what I said.” She said, though her statement about the drink caused her to let out a low chuckle. “I have no quarrel with my clothes getting bloody if I have to. You would have been in for a show if that demon was still around.”
