“You do have heart, Lilith. It’s just not something you openly admit to. Quite possibly because of things that happened in the past. Once upon a time ago, you told me that you were close to someone, and it went horribly wrong,” Levi said, settling a little and closing her eyes. “It’s possibly the same reason I don’t get close to people. I get hurt, or they get hurt. Not exactly… A fun thing to feel.” She let out a sigh, but smiled. The girl had heart, and she knew it. Levi only knew little pieces of the story— Things she could recall from an earlier on meeting with Lilith. But it did explain a lot.
"That’ll probably work. More likely than not, it will. Until I get asked about filing reports and have to turn it down against their better wishes,“ she murmured, a faint chuckle escaping her lips. Gosh, was she tired. Her entire body just felt like lead weights in water, slowly sinking into murky depths that were strangely cold and empty feeling. It would pass, and Levi knew it. This was what happened pretty much every time a hunt went wrong. She’d get whomped up pretty good and just feel like she was slipping off into some other world.
Rest. That was a good idea. She probably needed more rest than she wanted to admit to. Even though Lilith had said she’d take care of whatever came their way, Levi felt and obligation to do as much to keep them safe as she could do, too. Friendship worked like that; people who were there for you, you tended to return that favor to. Resting her cheek against Lilith’s shoulder, Levi smiled faintly and let her eyes flutter open for a moment.
"You should laugh a little more,” she said quietly, that smile seating on her lips a bit more permanently. “It’s a good sound from you. I kinda like it,” she told the other girl, letting her eyes flutter closed. Levi could feel herself drifting into that loopy state of things, where sometimes more words came out than needed. Rather than continue on with her previous thought, she let out an exhausted sigh, nuzzled her cheek against the other girl’s shoulder, and relaxed just a little more.
"Thank you for coming for me.“

– ”… The relationship I had with him…“ she mumbled to herself as she continued walking. ”… I’ll tell you more about it once we’re at the hospital and you’re feeling better. It’s a bit of a long story, but I can tell you some of it right now. Maybe it’ll help calm you down. I’m not exactly sure where to begin, however.“ She assumed she would just start talking about it from the beginning, but the girls next few words caused a pause.
”… I’ll try to,“ she replied, blinking once at a realization. She never did laugh often; or genuinely, either. Most of the time, her laughs were empty; it was rare to have a genuine, full out string of laughter to come from Death. Usually, however, when she laughed, that so called heart of hers thumped. She didn’t know why; it just did. Maybe she was more human than what she thought she was. ”… Only for you, though, I’ll try to laugh more.“
The next sentence hit her like a bullet. She was being thanked; for something she would have never done if she hadn’t started developing a bit of a fondness for the girl she was carrying. Lilith’s breathing hitched slightly as she felt her heart beat a couple of times again, though she soon gave one of her rare, full on smiles. Why she felt a bit at ease with this girl, enough to manage genuinely laughing and smiling, she didn’t know. The feeling was rather new to her, even if she had felt it once before; but only once.
”… You’re welcome.“
She supposed she was more human than she thought. She remembered somebody having pointed that out to her once when she had been doing a job. Yes, she was Death. Yes, she was supposed to be emotionless, cold, and silent. They had somehow found out she had the one thing she hated admitting to. That she had an actual, beating heart; and that she cared for certain people genuinely.
